metaphacts and Ontotext launch new end-user interface on top of the Wikidata Knowledge Graph, supporting the research and academic community

Now, you can interact with the Wikidata Knowledge Graph (Wikidata KG) through a robust new end-user interface built by metaphacts and Ontotext. It delivers enhanced functionality and a more intuitive user experience to help make Wikidata accessible to a wider audience. The new interface leverages metaphactory, metaphacts' FAIR knowledge graph platform, and GraphDB, Ontotext's graph database engine.

This collaboration introduces several features that support the democratization of the Wikidata KG, such as a powerful visual interface, advanced semantic search, pathfinding algorithms and more. The interface includes added functionalities that enable users to explore topics within the Wikidata KG freely and without restriction. Additionally, there is an educational element for users who want to learn how to best leverage the Wikidata KG through prepared examples and explanations. This helps make information more accessible to all users and extends Wikidata’s utility to support diverse needs.

The interface is built, hosted and maintained by metaphacts, at no cost to its users. In addition to being free to access the online demo system, members of the research community are eligible for free academic metaphactory licenses and a targeted metaphactory app (available upon request). It supports the deployment of metaphactory and connection to the Wikidata endpoint in their own environment.

The Wikidata KG is a free, open and collaborative knowledge database storing structured data to support Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects. It’s an extremely valued resource created by the Semantic Web community and is relied on by many diverse groups, such as researchers, educators, students and organizations, with many advocates of open data deeply invested in the maintenance and preservation of this service. Given Wikidata’s extensive and versatile benefits and its support of a variety of needs, it is paramount to have a KG user interface that is better attuned to visualizing, exploring and extracting insights. This project is the latest contribution to the research and academic community by metaphacts founder, Peter Haase, and Ontotext’s founder and CEO, Atanas Kiryakov’s—who have both been part of the Semantic Web community for over 20 years.

Building an open data world takes a village, and it’s because of the Semantic Web community, who laid the foundation—brick by brick—that we have the semantic technologies and standards that exist today. We want to now support the research community to further advancements and so that innovations can happen." - Dr. Peter Haase, Founder & Chief Scientific Officer, metaphacts

Wikidata is one of the biggest and most diverse knowledge graphs - 72 million entities described with over 10 billions statements, including 6 million people, 1 million chemical compounds and 300 000 movies. It’s also the most popular one, peaking over 25 million SPARQL queries per day. Wikidata’s front end tools are designed to serve the basic editorial and search scenarios for its broad user base of over 20,000 active users with different qualifications. There is much more to be done for advanced search and exploration for research purposes - this is the purpose of our service." - Atanas Kiryakov, CEO, Founder, Ontotext

Powerful visual interface

By creating a new interface to sit on top of the Wikidata KG, users are now able to interact with Wikidata information intuitively and can benefit from its richness regardless of experience or industry background. For example, it includes advanced exploration interfaces for those in the life sciences field, such as a protein viewer, and it allows federation with other public data sources, enabling researchers to visualize a specific protein using data that’s relevant to them.

Advanced semantic search

Another addition is a semantic search functionality, which offers users an alternative method for searching for information in Wikidata beyond its SPARQL Query service. Users can filter or scope out their queries to locate precise information quickly or explore a topic flexibly and in-depth using the structured data that powers the search interface.

Smart algorithms for pathfinding and more…

Ontotext’s sophisticated GraphDB pathfinding algorithm paired with metaphacts’ visual pathfinding interface provides users with a simple way to discover relations between nodes without having previous knowledge of SPARQL or the underlying graph structure. Users can fully explore the relations between the nodes of interest and refine their queries along the way.

There are also a number of other notable features, including cool interfaces like the Chemical Structure Search and Similarity Search using Word2Vec, that you’ll discover when you explore the new interface on top of the Wikidata KG.
